Urban Regional Park
Under the adopted City of Tustin Reuse Plan for MCAS Tustin, and the County's application for federal surplus property for public park or recreation purposes, an 84.5 acre Urban Regional Park will be conveyed to the County of Orange by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a no-cost public benefit conveyance. Located within the Urban Regional Park is the North Blimp Hangar. This 60-year-old, 170-foot-tall wooden hangar has a seven-acre interior space footprint and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The County also intends to locate several County services/uses within the Urban Regional Park including an Animal Control facility, Sheriff’s Training Academy and Family Counseling Center. The Urban Regional Park is in close proximity to the City of Tustin’s proposed Community Park and is centrally located within the Tustin Legacy and is close to planned residential, educational and business uses at the Tustin Legacy. The Urban Regional Park will be accessible via new roadways and an extensive bikeway system.
The County of Orange has recently released a Request for Developer Expressions of Interest (REI) intended to seek economically feasible development concepts for the hangar that are recreational in nature, such as sport, museum, special event, theater or cultural uses. Non-recreational uses that are ancillary but supportive of the primary recreational uses, such as a gift or sport shops and restaurants, would also be acceptable. A copy of the REI is available at the web site located at the bottom of this page. Developer responses are due to the County by 4:00 p.m. on July 2, 2003.
